Palestinian Health Sector Faces Critical Medicine Shortages Amid Revenue Freeze

(MENAFN) Thousands of Palestinian patients, including more than 4,000 people undergoing cancer treatment, are facing growing health risks as essential medicines and medical supplies disappear from public warehouses due to an escalating financial crisis, according to health officials.

The Health Ministry said the worsening shortages are linked to Israel’s continued withholding of clearance revenues, known as maqasa funds. These revenues consist of taxes collected on imports entering the Palestinian territories either through Israel or border crossings under Israeli control, with the funds intended for transfer to the Palestinian Authority.

According to officials, Israel began reducing portions of these revenues in 2019 for various reasons and has not transferred the funds for more than a year. The accumulated amount being withheld has now surpassed $5 billion.

In a statement, the ministry reported that more than 726 types of medicines and medical consumables are no longer available in central storage facilities. It warned that stocks of critical medications, cancer drugs, emergency medical supplies and other life-saving treatments have reached dangerously low levels, placing additional pressure on the healthcare system and threatening patient care.
