Syria Begins Accepting Applications for Raqqa Electoral Body

(MENAFN) Syria’s electoral authority announced on Monday the start of applications for the formation of an electoral body in the northern Raqqa Governorate, aiming to strengthen democratic participation and ensure representation across all regions.

According to a statement cited by a news agency from the Higher Committee for the People’s Assembly Elections, the applications are intended to form election bodies in the Raqqa and Tabqa electoral districts.

The statement said the Raqqa district will have 150 members on the electoral body to elect three members of parliament, while Tabqa will have 50 members to elect one representative.

Raqqa Governorate comprises three districts—Raqqa, Tabqa, and Tell Abyad—with representatives for Tell Abyad already elected last October.

On Feb. 17, the Supreme Committee for People’s Assembly Elections issued the final list of subcommittees for the Raqqa and Tabqa districts.

Earlier, in October, Syria conducted an indirect election for its People’s Assembly, the first since the ouster of the Bashar al-Assad regime. Around 6,000 voters selected from electoral bodies across the country cast ballots to elect two-thirds of the 210-seat assembly. Under the transitional system, 140 seats are contested through these indirect votes, while the president appoints the remaining 70 members.
