Syrian Forces Take Control of Al-Tanf Base
Government sources confirmed on Wednesday that the Syrian Army has deployed personnel to the facility. US forces reportedly relocated to a nearby site known as Tower 22, situated close to the demilitarized zone along the Jordan-Syria border, approximately 22 kilometers (13 miles) from al-Tanf.
While the al-Tanf base previously hosted around 200 US troops at its peak, there is no verified information on the number of personnel now stationed at Tower 22.
The al-Tanf installation, which was expanded in 2017 and 2018, had been used by the US alongside surveillance balloons to monitor military activity by Iran-backed groups and the ISIS (Daesh) terrorist organization across a wide area stretching from the Jordanian border to the Euphrates River.
