Syrian army moves into Tabqa, surrounds PKK-affiliated forces at airbase

(MENAFN) Syrian military authorities announced on Saturday evening that their forces had started moving into the city of Tabqa in northeastern Syria’s Raqqa province, advancing from several directions while surrounding PKK-linked militant fighters positioned inside the Tabqa military airbase.

According to official military statements, units under the army’s operations command launched a coordinated entry into Tabqa from multiple fronts, simultaneously tightening their encirclement of armed groups entrenched within the military airport, as stated by reports.

These advances followed a broader expansion of government control across the rural areas of Raqqa, with forces moving into additional cities, towns, and villages. The deployments form part of an ongoing operation west of the Euphrates River that gained momentum after the withdrawal of the YPG/SDF group, according to reports.

At the same time, intense fighting was reported in and around Tabqa, during which YPG/SDF elements reportedly began pulling out from positions west of the Euphrates in organized convoys, according to reports.

The situation unfolded alongside statements by Ferhat Abdi Sahin, described as a senior figure within the YPG/SDF group targeted by the operation west of the Euphrates, who claimed that militant forces would begin relocating to areas east of the river starting at 7 a.m. local time (0400 GMT), according to reports.

In a related development, reports recalled that in March 2025 the Syrian presidency announced an agreement aimed at integrating the YPG/SDF organization into state institutions, reiterating Syria’s commitment to territorial integrity and rejecting any form of partition.
