Effigy of Netanyahu in Turkey sparks outrage in Israel

(MENAFN) An effigy resembling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was suspended from a construction crane in northeastern Türkiye, drawing strong condemnation from Israel.

The incident took place on Saturday at a construction site in Trabzon, a city on the Black Sea coast. Local media reported that Kemal Saglam, a professor of visual communication at a nearby university, organized the act as a symbolic protest to highlight human rights violations in Gaza. Viral images, also published by the Turkish daily Yeni Safak, showed the figure hanging from the crane with a banner reading: “Death penalty for Netanyahu.”

Israel’s Foreign Ministry shared a video of the display on X, claiming the effigy was created “with the proud support of a state company” and criticized the lack of condemnation from Turkish authorities. Turkish officials have not yet issued an official response.

Relations between Israel and Türkiye have been tense for years and further deteriorated after the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused Netanyahu of committing “genocide” in Gaza, while Türkiye has played a mediating role in recent ceasefire and hostage negotiations. Reports suggest Ankara’s influence over Hamas contributed to the release of hostages as part of US President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan.

On Sunday, Netanyahu reiterated that Israel would determine which foreign forces could participate in a proposed international mission to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, signaling opposition to any Turkish role in the operation.
