Clashes Between Groups Erupt in Southern Syria

(MENAFN) Violent confrontations in Syria's southern Suwayda governorate have resulted in the deaths of over 30 individuals and injuries to nearly 100 others.

The clashes, involving armed Bedouin tribal factions and Druze militias, erupted in the Al-Maqous neighborhood on Sunday evening. Preliminary information released by the Interior Ministry on Monday confirmed the casualties, marking a significant escalation in regional hostilities.

The ministry voiced serious alarm and grief over what it described as “bloody developments” between “local armed groups and tribes.”

In response to the deteriorating situation, the ministry declared that its forces, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense, would "intervene directly in the region to resolve the conflict, stop clashes, impose security, prosecute those responsible for the events, and refer them to the competent judiciary.”

An official state news outlet, reported that several military personnel also lost their lives while attempting to safeguard civilians from these outlawed elements.

However, the agency did not provide additional specifics regarding the total number of casualties.

Interior Minister Anas Khattab attributed the ongoing unrest to “the absence of state institutions, particularly military and security ones.”

He emphasized that the only viable resolution involves reestablishing authority and reviving the role of governmental institutions.

Khattab stated on his X account, “There is no solution to this except imposing security (measures) and activating the role of institutions to ensure civil peace and the return of life to its normal state in all its details.”
