Egypt Joins Diplomatic Push on US-Iran Talks

(MENAFN) Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a phone call Saturday with US presidential envoy Steven Witkoff to discuss the trajectory of ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry announced.

Both sides addressed "the course of the US-Iranian negotiations, the rapid developments in the region, and efforts aimed at de-escalation and reducing tensions," according to the ministry's readout.

Abdelatty stressed "the importance of reducing regional tensions and avoiding the risks of an uncontrolled escalation that threatens the security and stability of the region." He further underscored "the importance of adhering to the diplomatic path and prioritizing dialogue to ensure the security and stability of the region's countries and their people."

Witkoff praised "Egypt's role in supporting efforts to reduce regional tensions," and affirmed "the desire to continue coordination and consultation between the two countries in the coming period," the Egyptian statement said.

Pakistan is leading mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran to bring the conflict — which erupted February 28 following US and Israeli strikes on Iran — to a close. A temporary ceasefire brokered by Islamabad took hold April 8, though subsequent talks failed to produce a lasting agreement, prompting President Trump to extend the truce indefinitely.

Earlier Saturday, Pakistan reported "encouraging progress" toward a "final understanding" between the two parties, as both sides continue exchanging proposals to resume direct dialogue.
